1. ok, tell us when you got time. We could also have a special Scratch Club at another day of the week if that's more comfortable for you (we did change the regularly date from Wednesday to Monday only a few weeks ago).
2. Could you send us more information about the planed new translation system? Can we test it?
3. Our main problem with pootle and the old system is, that it is so far away from "what you see is what you get" as it could be: You translate 10.000s of little textsnippets and never know where, in which format and context they will be used: Even if you are lucky to find out where a textsnippet will be displayed, you have no possibility to find out how will it look like (e.g. does it fit in the space?) until it's published. Also you never know the exact time of the next publishing and if it has already happened. With that many unseccurites about what, how, where and when you act like blind at the translation server: You only translate as many snippets as possible and hope that there will be a good result somehow, sometime somewhere...
4. We could make a suggestion article about translation like we started with a suggestion article about better integration of the wiki with the website here: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Scratch_Wiki_talk:Community_Portal/Connect_Wiki_and_Website
5. We already got a german translation portal here (see also the links at "siehe auch" at the bottom of that article, you could use google translate because it's all german): http://scratch-dach.info/wiki/Scratch-Wiki:Übersetzungs-Portal
6. In DACH people of the translation team and the wiki are the same. It's a great motivation to work together at the wiki, translation and to have a weekly online hangout with that people. Perhaps that could be an idea for other languages to? We are just in building more wikis at our kind if "wiki incubator" here: http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test_Scratch_Wiki_Home

I just wanted to say hi as I'm taking over the translation community management from Natalie and she forwarded your message. We're looking at a new translation system (pootle replacement) and piloting it with the ScratchJr project as it has much fewer strings. We're still in the very early stages, but when we have something to show I'd like to join one of your hangouts and see what your translators think of it.

I am very sorry for the delay in getting back to you on the translation pseudo-language — and the hide and show issue.
Andrew, our new engineering lead, is planning to upgrade us to a better translation server that allows translating in context. However, in the meantime we would like to address the issues you raised. I had thought that the “hide” and “show” overwriting issue was solved but will check to make sure.
I’m writing with another question. We heard from Google CS First that they are localizing their materials into German, French, and Italian.
In the process, they are asking about some of the current translation on the Scratch blocks. For German, they asked about the current wording for “move 10 steps” - as “gehe 10 er-Schritt” (move 10 steps). Is there a reason to choose “gehe” for move?
They are also suggesting that they could help make the capitalization consistent.
We want to check with you to see what you think, as we know you have thought so much about the translation and localization of Scratch.

We wanted to let you know about new resources added to the Scratch translation server.
Hour of Code page
We have a new Hour of Code page in preparation for December 7 to 13, 2015. You can see it here: * http://scratch.mit.edu/hoc You can find the strings on the Scratch translation server within Scratch Website section. Within the po file, check “Locations” and search for the page name: hoc.html
Hide-and-Seek Game Tutorial
We added a new tutorial in the Tips Window for Hour of Code that shows how to make a hide-and-seek game:
To find these pages, look within Scratch Tips Window, and search for the word: hide (See attached image).
Images
Update images for the Scratch tutorials and help are available as usual in the en images Dropbox folder. (Images in subfolders are those for special events and thus may be lower priority to translate.)
New Scratch Cards and Workshop Guides
We also created new Scratch cards and facilitator guides (PDFs) for each of the three tutorials featured on the Hour of Code page. If you are able to edit InDesign files, they will be made available in this Dropbox folder.

The developers are investigating the issue with the missing strings - sorry they aren’t showing!
About your proposition, I’m not sure if we understand. Are you able to translate on the pootle server itself or are you downloading the po files? Could you explain more about what you’re suggesting?
I’m adding Shruti Mohnot to this email - she has joined our team as a volunteer, and we’ve asked her to help us to improve our process for translators.

Hi Natalie,
I can find the phrase "clean up" only within "Version 1.4" where it has been translated long ago. I'd expect it in "Scratch Editor", but this file obvously has not been updated since Aug 15th.

Thanks for your understanding reply! I just found out that the deploy has been delayed now until Sept. 28 :/ So sorry! I understand they are making upgrades to the servers now to avoid future problems. So I’m sorry that the missing strings won’t appear. However, that does give you more time to translate the new tutorials that have been added to the translation server for Code Week EU .

Please confirm if you receive this message. I'm wondering why you did not receive my earlier reply (below). I'm trying to send through a different mail server to see if this helps at all. Unfortunately the backend upgrade (Django) caused major problems on Thursday and Friday, so our development team was not able to fix the translation server or deploy the site yet. It is the top priority for them to fix the translation server update on Monday and I'm hoping now that a fix will go out so that translations are fixed for Tuesday (fingers crossed) or else for the main deploy on Thursday. There will be some new strings for a couple tutorials, including for Code Week EU, which is a variation on the dance tutorial. None of them will be in the main tips window, but will be pointed to from the Code Week EU site (http://codeweek.eu/resources/ ). I will send any updates! Thanks again for all your hard work and patience as our new engineering lead, Andrew, gets started and helps make improvements to this whole process.

Thanks for writing about this. The developers have made the fix for the About and other webpages, as well as the editor, and the deploy to scratch.mit.eduis scheduled for next Thursday. (The issue has been they are doing a major upgrade to the backend server (Django), so that delayed the regular 3-week deploy cycle.) We greatly appreciate all your work, and have recently hired an engineering lead, Andrew Sliwinski, (one of the founders ofdiy.org) who has a great deal of experience with localization/translation in Pootle and is going to make it a top priority! I have told him about your work, and we plan to be communicating more soon.

Thanks again for you help with Scratch translation. With your help, more kids around the world are creating and learning with Scratch.
Scratch website translation template has been updated recently with more strings. The new strings fall mainly into two categories: • Scratch discussion forums: to find these, download your language translation file to complete the translation offline, and look for strings that are located under "s2forums" • Scratch Tips window (which shows up in the editor): we completed the tips for most of the blocks. To find these, look for the untranslated strings located under "templates/info/help/studio/tips" Unfortunately, some strings are still not available for translation in the editor template. I've created a document with missing strings. Please let me know if you find anything else. Thanks. [1]
